How To Use A Fire Extinguisher
P.A.S.S. stands for Pull Aim Squeeze Sweep. To operate a fire extinguisher properly:
PULL - The first step is to pull the pin that prevents the handle from being squeezed.
AIM - The second step is to aim the spray nozzle or hose at the fire. Aim low at the base of the fire.
SQUEEZE - The third step is to squeeze the handle to spray the contents. Remember a standard fire extinguisher
has less than 30 seconds of spray time.
SWEEP - The final step is to sweep back and forth as you spray the base of the fire.

What Kind of Fire Extinguishers You Need For Your Business And Requirements
Three factors must be considered in determining the proper distribution of fire extinguishers:
Floor Area
In office areas, fire extinguishers with a minimum rating of 2A-10BC shall be provided, one unit for every 3000 square feet.
a. In mercantile, service, and production areas, fire extinguishers with a minimum rating of 2A-10BC shall be provided at the rate
of one unit of "A" for every 1500 square feet. (5lb ABC Fire Extinguisher)
b. In storage areas, fire extinguishers with a minimum rating of 4A-40BC ( usually 4A-60BC are available) shall be provided at the rate of
one unit of "A" rating for every 1000 square feet. (10lb ABC Fire Extinguisher)
Travel Distance
OSHA requires that all employees of a business have access to an extinguisher within 75 feet travel-distance in locations such as offices, classrooms, and assembly halls.
All employees of a business should have access to an extinguisher within 50 feet travel-distance in such locations as workshops, storage areas, research operations, garages, warehouses, or service and manufacturing areas.
Location
Fire extinguishers shall be located along normal paths of exit travel and readily accessible. Usually in hallways, laundry rooms, meeting rooms, kitchens, mechanical/electrical rooms, and near exit doors. Fire extinguishers should be mounted on brackets or in wall cabinets with their carrying handles placed 3-1/2 to 5 feet above the floor. Larger fire extinguishers (over 40 lbs. gross weight), should be no more than 3-1/2 feet above the floor. Contact the Fire Department prior to occupancy for approval of number, location, and type of fire extinguishers to be installed.
Service
Each year a portable fire extinguisher is required to receive an "annual maintenance." The NFPA 10 Sec. 3.3.18 describes an
annual maintenance as " A thorough examination of the fire extinguisher. It is intended to give maximum assurance that a fire extinguisher
will operate effectively and safely. It includes a thorough examination for physical damage or condition to prevent its operation and any
necessary repair or replacement ..." NFPA 10 Sec. 6.22 states the procedures for a "periodic inspection of fire extinguishers shall include a
check of at least the following items: (a) Located in a designated place (b) No obstructions to access or visibility (c) Operating instructions
on nameplate legible and facing outward (d) Safety seals and tamper indicators not broken or missing (e) Fullness determined by
weighing or hefting (f) Examined for physical damage, corrosion, leakage, or clogged nozzle (g) Pressure gauge reading or indicator in the
operable range or position.
In addition to supplying the approved fire extinguishers and having them placed in the proper location, your business should train your
employees in the safe operation of the fire extinguishers. Also, an annual inspection of the fire extinguishers is required and must be documented. Your business is responsible for the maintenance and testing of all portable fire extinguishers in the workplace.
